Campus police officers exercise the powers and duties conferred by law upon police officers of cities, towns, or counties, according to Va. Code § 23-234 including, but not limited to, enforcing criminal and traffic laws of the Code of Virginia, making arrests, issuing traffic summonses and conducting criminal investigations. Campus police officers are certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Security officers are also certified by DCJS, but do not have police or arrest powers.
Campus Police and Security Officers are trained and certified in CPR and the use of an AED (automatic emergency defibrillator). They assist with emergencies, evacuations, and drills, as well as vehicle battery jumps, unlocking cars and providing escorts to parking lots.
